Community

In 2007 the church community began a ‘Vision’ process to work out what God is calling us to do and be.

From this came our mission statement –

Seeking God – Sharing Faith – Serving Halifax

Halifax Minster aims to be at the heart of the community in Halifax.

There are many ways of being involved with the Minster, including:

  • Attend services and support events
  • Donate to support the conservation of the Minster
  • Become a Friend of Halifax Minster
  • Volunteer at the Minster

Music

Halifax Minster has a long tradition of music making and this includes choirs, the Harrison and Snetzler organs, and an ever expanding concert programme. Currently the Vicar is acting Director of Music supported by Graham Gribbin as Organist and Phillip Tordoff as Organ Emeritus.

The Minster Choir

The Minster Choir sings every Sunday during term time and rehearse Tuesday evenings in the Song School of the Minster. The Choir regularly performs both for television and radio, and we are always looking for new members.

The Minster Chamber Choir

The Minster Chamber Choir is for experienced singers who sing occasional services, and some concerts. The standard is high, and an ability to read music is essential. Joint occasions with the Minster Choir and Brass make for an exciting performance, especially around Christmas and the Minster Summer Festival. New members always welcome.

Organ Recitals

The Friends of the Music organise weekly Organ recitals which take place each Thursday at 1pm.

Concert Programme

The Minster hosts concerts throughout the year. Further information can be found in the Events section of the website, and enquiries about hiring the Minster for a concert or charity fundraising event should be made through the Minster Offices.

All enquiries with regard to Music should be made with the Vicar Hilary Barber.

Learning

Welcome to Halifax Minsters Education Department!

“Fantastic – organised and super communication! ” – WestVale Primary School

Messy Church Easter 1

At Halifax Minster we aim to provide a rang e of Educational visits that meet school’s curriculum needs and are fun for children.  As you can see from the feedback boxes on this page we are achieving our aim!

We are currently working on visits that meet the needs of the new RE Syllabus for Calderdale and Kirklees, which will be launched this September.  This new curriculum provides us with the opportunity to support schools as they go through a time of transition and re-evaluating their RE delivery.

“Excellent visit – our pupils really enjoyed it and it matched our group’s needs” – Carr Green Primary School

Watch out for other new visits and opportunities in the comming months.

History

The following pages hold a history of over 900 years of Halifax Minster (formerly Halifax Parish Church).

The information is organised into a number of sections.

Worship

“Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth.
Worship the Lord with gladness;
come into his presence with singing” (Psalm 100)

Services at the Minster involve a range of elements such as listening to God’s word, praying together in silence or aloud, sharing in the Eucharist, listening to someone preach, and singing hymns and psalms of praise. All are welcome to join us in worship.
