Special Workshops 2011-12

A number of workshops are available: -

 

 

Technology Workshops

10am/12.45pm

Subjects covered: History, Technology, Music.

Two hours of workshops where pupils are given an insight into how the technology of an organ works.

During the workshops they will:

  • Find out how an early English organ is played and works using the Wethering sett organ
  • Find out how different sounds are generated using the Wingfield instrument, organ pipes and their own instruments (if pupils can bring them)
  • Make their own wind instrument out of junk.

 

The Organ in History

10am/12.45pm

Subjects covered: History, Music, PE.

Two hours of time travel where pupils are given the chance to explore 1525, 1766, 1929 from the perspective of the organ and its music.

  • In each time period they will have the chance to see the costumes of the time and try some on.
  • They will listen to a variety of music of the time played on the organ.
  • They will learn how people lived at this time.
  • Finally they will have the opportunity to learn a dance of the time!

 

Music and Singing through Time

10am/12.45pm

Subjects covered: History, Music, RE

Two hours of discovering the different musical styles of 1525, 1766, and 1929, and learning the songs both sacred and folk of the time.

  • Each historical organ will accompany pupils in the songs that the organ was built to play.
  • Pupils will have a chance to compare secular and sacred music as well as discover that the influences they had on each other.
  • Pupils will have an opportunity to hear one piece of music in three styles, try out singing medieval plain song, responsorial singing (18th Century Metrical Palm) and a 1920’s Sunday School hymn.

Times (Times are approximate and can be flexible to fit in with travel)

Morning visit: 10.00-12.00

Afternoon visit:  12.30-2.30 (If whole day booked day afternoon start will be 12.45)

Train and bus: The Minster is a short walk from both Halifax Train Station and Bus Station.

Road: The Minster is accessible from major road including M62.
