Mothers' Union Notes for May

The Branch meeting took place in the Waterhouse Homes Community Room on Wednesday 28th March.  Mrs Janet Hardy welcomed the members and said this was a particularly happy occasion because we were to welcome a new member.  She then invited Canon Frank Carless to take the service of admitting Mrs Hazel Gelder as a member of the Mothers' Union.

Mrs Gelder has attended the Branch meetings ever since they began at the Homes.  She is one of the residents.  Canon Carless read out the Aims and Objectives of the MU.  We all re-affirmed our resolve to maintain them in these challenging times.  We hope Hazel will feel very happy to belong to Halifax Minster Branch.

Our speaker, then, was Mrs Doreen Baxter to tell us about "My M&S".  Mrs Baxter said this year was the 125th anniversary of the founding in Leeds of this famous retail store.  The first Mr Marks had come to England as a penniless refugee and began to sell door-to-door cheap necessities.  He later entered into a partnership with Mr Spencer and opened a stall in Kirkgate Market in Leeds.  This partnership did not succeed but the name of the business remained unchanged.  Mrs Baxter spoke very enthusiastically about her time as an employee of "M&S".  The firm was good to work for.  Mrs Hardy thanked her for an interesting afternoon which told us much about a favourite shop.
